A visit to the doctor - Una visita all'ospedale

We are at Mass General today. We just finished talking to an anesthesiologist about epidurals. Enrica is still nervous, but we are both relieved that it can be administered at any time up to the actual birth.

Siamo all'ospedale Massachusetts General. Abbiamo appena parlato con una anestetiologa sull'inizione epidurale. Enrica e' ancora nervosa, ma ci sentiamo rassicurati che l'inizione puo' essere amministrata in qualsiasi momento prima della nascita.

Little William is getting bigger and often complains about being in my crowded tommy. He is moving a lot and constantly. William can now taste the lasagna I cook, he can hear "o sole mio" and he can experience the excitement of his mum behind the wheel...

It's a boy, it's a boy! - E' un maschietto, e' un maschietto!

2 February 2009: 16 weeks and a half
Today I went to do a pretty serious genetic test called amniocentesis. I was so scared of getting this done for different reasons (including the risk of miscarriage) and was really not looking forward to it. On the contrary, it turned out to be one of the happiest days of my life... Just while I was holding John's hands strongly to cope with the fear of doing the amnio, the nurse said, "I am pretty sure, you will have a boy"... This was further confirmed by the hospital radiologist who came to take further pictures of the baby after the amnio. So this is the amazing news, and so William will be! :) More precisely, there will be our William Mario, John William, John's father, his ant's Janet father, John's grandfather William Peter, and his great-grandfather William Antonio (not sure) at a minimum for an anunbroken line of Williams - at least six generations!

I am very anxious to know the results of the amnio. My morning sickness comes and go and my body is changing a lot! There is so much we are going through right now: selling our house in Waltham, moving to a new house, learn to cook new dishes, find better physical therapy for my herniated disk, decision to continue or give up PhD (the dilemma is still with me - there are times I can see progress but there are times I can only see useless and endless work), go to London to try to finish the PhD or not, look for a job here in the US, get my learning permit and wait for the snow to go away to try to get the driving licence before William is born.

2 February 2009: 16 settimane e mezzo
Oggi sono andata a fare un serio test genetico dal nome amniocentesis. Avevo molta paura di fare questo test per diversi motivi (compreso il rischio di perdere il feto) e speravo che il giorno del test passasse piu' in fretta possibile. Al contrario, e' stato una dei giorni piu' felici della mia vita... Proprio mentre stringevo le mani di John per proteggermi dalla paura di fare il test, l'infermiera mi disse all'improvviso, "Sono quasi sicura, avrai un maschietto"... Questo commento fu poi confermato dal ragiologo esperto dell'ospedale, il quale venne a fare altre fotografie del mio bimbo dopo il test della amnio. Cosi' queste sono le nostre news, and cosi' William sara'! :) Piu' precisamente, ci sara' il nostro William Mario, John William, il papa' di John, il papa' di sua zia Janet, suo nonno William Peter, ed il bisnonno di John, che doveva chiamarsi William Antonio, una lunga catena di Williams - almeno sei generazioni!

Sono ansiosa di conoscere i risultati della amnio. La mia nausea va e viene ed il mio corpo e' cambiato incredibilmente! Stanno avvenendo cosi' tante cose nella nostra vita: vendere casa, trovare una nuova casa, trovare migliori metodi di fisioterapia per la mia ernia al disco, impararare a cucinare piatti nuovi, decisione di continuare o abbandonare il PhD (il dilemma e' ancora con me - ci sono momenti in cui vedo il progresso ma ci sono altri momenti in cui vedo solo lavoro inutile e senza fine), andare a London a cercare di finire il PhD oppure no, trovare lavoro qui negli Stati Uniti, prendere il patentino di guida e aspettare che la neve vada via per riuscire a prendere la patente di guida.

13 January 2009: 13 1/2 weeks
So, now we are up to 13 1/2 weeks and today's sonogram was much more detailed. We won't know the sex of the baby until 18 weeks. Today was pretty cool because we could see Tronk opening his/her mouth and moving arms.

We think the name will either be William Mario (I'm the 4th William ina row and Mario is Enrica's grandfather) or Julia Susan (also bothfamily names). I'm kind of surprised at how traditional we are being!

13 Gennaio 2009: 13 settimane e mezzo
Il sonogramma di oggi era molto piu' dettagliato. Non sapremo il sesso del bimbo fino alla 18esima settimana. La visita oggi e' stata speciale perche' abbiamo visto Tronk aprire la bocca e muovere le braccia. Pensiamo che il nome sara' o William Mario (Io sono il quarto William di seguito e Mario e' il nonno di Enrica) o Julia Susan (Julia e' il secondo nome della mamma di Enrica e Susan e' il nome di mia sorella). Sono un po' sorpreso su come siamo tradizionali!

P.S Oggi abbiamo visto Tronk muovere la manina verso di noi e aprire la bocca come per salutarci. Mio papa' dice che e' un maschietto. Weya! Enrica

11 December 2008: 8 weeks and 6 days
Once upon a time there was a little beautiful thing...

Well, Enrica and I went in for the first sonogram today. We were one day off on our estimate (Enrica constantly says I'm a swiss clock), so the official due date is 17 July 09.
Until we have the next sonograms we won't know the sex of the baby...so we've decided rather than to say him/her, etc. we'd go with "Tronk"(a character in the Italian movie "Desert of the Tartars"), until we actually pick a real name.
We were really happy to see Tronk moving around and a strong beating heart.

C'era una volta una piccola cosa bellissima...

Ebbene, Enrica ed io siamo andati a fare il primo sonogramma oggi. Eravamo un giorno in ritardo dai nostri calcoli (Enrica dice sempre che sono un orologio svizzero), cosi' sembra che la data ufficiale di nascita sia il 17 di Luglio 2009.
Non sappiamo il sesso del bimbo fino a quando facciamo i prossimi sonogrammi (allora scieglieremo il nome vero)... cosi' per ora abbiamo deciso di chiamarlo "Tronk" (un personaggio trovato nel film italiano "Il Deserto dei Tartari).
